First Week Events for October
October 4, 2010
Dear Families:
It’s official: Fall is here! I’d like to make you aware of several exciting activities that will take place this month.
Wednesday, October 6 is our first OPT meeting for parents. I will also offer volunteer training at 5:30, just before the meeting. There are other district trainings being offered that day at Fowler, at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. You may attend either of these trainings instead if the West Side time is not convenient. Please RSVP at the school where you want to attend. The number for Fowler is 287-1949.
We’ll start our student activities this week with Jumpstart Read For The Record on Thursday, October 7. This is a day when all the teachers all over the world will read the same book to their classes at some time during the day. The book chosen for this year is “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats.
We will kick off West Side Spirit Week on Friday, October 8th with an assembly at 1:30. This is also the time and date for Coffee with the Principal. It will take place this month in the school lobby. The purpose of this assembly is to explain what West Side school spirit and pride is! We will explain what school spirit is...even do some cheers!! Each teacher has also been asked to choose one student to come up to the microphone and tell what West Side School means to them. Parents who will have coffee with Mrs Manley will still have this in the lobby and will be able to see our School Spirit first hand!!
You have received information from your child’s teacher about a take-home family project. The project is to create a poster to be displayed in the halls to help decorate for the week. They are to use as much blue and gold as possible!! Families can use any materials that they would like to decorate. Please return them by Thursday, October 7th so we can decorate our school with them.
Events planned for the following week include:
Monday October 11th: We are so excited that we will give you the day off and just call it Columbus Day!
Tuesday October 12th: This will be our Blue and Gold Day! Please wear as much blue and gold as you can! All posters will go up that day in the hallways and so the school will also be decked out in Blue and Gold!
Wednesday October 13th: West Side's Weird Wacky Wednesday, otherwise known as Dress Weird day! No face paint , please!
Thursday October 14th: Pajama Day
Finally Friday October 15th: Silly Hat Day
We hope that you are as excited as we are about these fun activities to be enjoyed by all in our school!! Please let us know if you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding this event!!
Progress Reports will also go home this Friday so look for them as well. I’ll write and update you again this month but you should look ahead and get ready for these:
October 19: School Photos
October 20: Family Book Night
October 21-22 Grandparents’ Breakfasts
October 29: Halloween Parade (Costumes must not be scary, no blood, gore or horror film representations. Parents, please no masks, wigs or face paint.)
Enjoy these first few days of the month. They're going to be great!
